Robert was admitted to Mercy Medical Center on June 1, 2025, for a below-the-knee amputation. After the surgery was completed, Robert’s hospital care team determined that the best course of action in his recovery journey would be inpatient rehabilitation to regain his strength and to learn how to navigate daily life with his new amputation. The patient, along with his care team, determined that Rockville Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center would be the best place for Robert to undergo his rehabilitation, in part due to their Comprehensive Amputee Program, where, in conjunction with 2 former Paralympic Gold Medalists, Todd Schaffauser and Dennis Oehler, patients learn how to navigate daily life post amputation.
Upon arrival at Rockville, Robert was greeted by Kevin Welge, the Director of Concierge Services, who ensured he was comfortable and oriented in his room. The patient also had the opportunity to speak with the nursing supervisor. Once he was all settled, Robert was eager to begin his rehab, and the amazing rehab staff were eager to help him get started.
Robert also met with Todd Schaffauser within a few days of arrival, who helped him set expectations for his rehab journey. Unfortunately, Robert’s initial amputation did not heal correctly, and so an above-the-knee amputation was performed.
At first, this deterred Robert from continuing his rehab journey, but the staff were able to cheer him up and while he waited for his second amputation to heal, he persevered and learned to walk using a walker on his non-amputated leg. Robert was finally given the clearance from his physician, a wound care specialist, to proceed with creating, adjusting, and ultimately final fitting for his prosthetic leg in December 2025.
On December 30, 2025, Robert took his very first steps with his new prosthesis. The staff were incredibly proud of him for this and cannot wait to see him walk even further. Through a lot of hard work, Robert has persevered and will continue to embrace his success. He will forever be grateful for all of the work and encouragement from Rockville’s amazing staff on this journey.
The staff at Rockville wishes Robert the very best on his continuing healthcare journey.
